Seethammal Leads the Way

Seethammal (Name changed to protect identity) is a federation member from Vickramangalam area in Madurai district. At the meeting, we discuss about the problems of female infanticide, bigamy and desertion. Seethammal attended many gender trainings at EKTA and has been a guiding force to many women. Generally, the women are blamed for giving birth to girls and mentally and physically abused by husbands and in-laws. In our trainings, we explained them about the X,Y chromosome that determines the sex of the child. To make the learning easier, we had a lady doctor talk to them with illustrated videos.

Seethammal has helped women who were harassed because they had delivered girl children. She was successful in resolving such conflicts with the learnings from EKTA’s training. Secondly with her knowledge of laws to protect women from violence, she has helped many women to approach police for assistance. Many women have refrained to go to the police for interrogation after 6pm.
